The Theodore McCown papers include his research on the Kawaiisu Indians, the prehistoric caves on Mt. Carmel, and various other excavations sites in the Middle East, the Africa, India, and California. The collection also consists of ingoing and outgoing correspondence between McCown and his family, as well as with colleagues, including Sir Arthur Keith, George MacCurdy, F. O. Barlow and others. Administrative correspondence with Kroeber and Heizer is included in the collection as well as field notes and published research projects.

Theodore McCown was born on June 18, 1908 in Macomb, Illinois. He moved to California in July, 1914. McCown graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with highest honors in Anthropology in December, 1929. In 1928, he spent three months as an assistant to Professor Professor Ronald L. Olson excavating Indian shell mounds on the coast near Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Island. In the summer of 1929, McCown spent three months with the Kawaiisu Indians in the mountains of east Bakersfield, California. Between 1932-1935 and 1937, he served as the archaeological assistant to the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem. The excavations were in Stone Age, prehistoric caves on Mount Carmel, 15 miles south of Haifa. Along with Sir Arthur Keith, McCown studied the fossil human skeletons of the Middle Paleolithic age. He returned to the University of California, Berkeley, in 1938. McCown began teaching while completing his work for a Ph.D., which he recieved in 1939. He became an Associate Professor in 1946 and a Full Professor in 1951. He died in Berkeley on August 17, 1969.
